Homeowner's Property Tax Refund
The state of Minnesota has two types of property tax refunds to help reduce the burden on taxpayers.
The first is for homeowners or renters whose property taxes exceed a specified percentage of household income. For taxes payable in 2024, the homeowner’s household income must have been less than $135,410 in 2023 to be eligible.
The second for homestead properties that meet the following requirements:
- The homesteader lived at the property on January 2 of the current year and the previous year;
- The net property tax on the homestead increased by more than 12 percent; and
- The increase was at least $100.
There is no income limit on the second type of refund.
Current year application forms and instructions may be found online, and are due to the Minnesota Department of Revenue by August 15.
If you are filing for the Homeowners Credit Refund, you may also file for free using the Minnesota Department of Revenue's Property Tax Refund Online Filing System.
Questions on these programs and how to apply should be directed directly to the Minnesota Department of Revenue at 800-652-9094.
