The St. Louis County Auditor issues various licenses and permits that authorize the licensee to conduct business in St. Louis County. For your convenience, most of the license applications are available for you to complete online.
 

Auctioneer

Obtaining an Auctioneer License

This license is issued by the St. Louis County Auditor and authorizes the licensee to conduct the business of an auctioneer in the State of Minnesota for a period of one year.  The license fee is $20.00.

Fireworks

Obtaining a Fireworks Permit

This permit is issued by the St. Louis County Auditor when a supervised outdoor fireworks display is held outside the limits of an incorporated municipality.  The sponsor of a display of fireworks must be a city, fair association, amusement park or other public or private organization; permits cannot be issued to individuals.  Request for the permit must be made at least 15-days prior to the event.  Minnesota state law requires that the display be conducted under the direct supervision of a pyrotechnic operator certified by the State Fire Marshall.  The permit fee is $52.00

Lawful Gambling

Obtaining a Gambling License

Lawful Gambling/Premises Permit requirements are complex and should be researched through the Gambling Control Board's web site.

Liquor

Obtaining an Alcohol and Liquor License

St. Louis County licenses establishments located in organized and unorganized townships within the County of St. Louis, Minnesota.  If the establishment is located in an organized township, town board approval is required.  If your establishment is located within a city, contact the city clerk's office.  All license applicants must meet the requirements of the following County Departments / Offices:  Sheriff, Attorney, Environmental Services, and Planning.  Depending on the type of license, additional licensing requirements may be required by the Minnesota Department of Health. 

New applicants must personally appear before the St. Louis County Liquor licensing Committee.  The Liquor Licensing Committee is a subcommittee appointed by the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners that's authorized to review, investigate, and make recommendations to the County Board relating to applications for liquor licenses.

The St. Louis County Board of Commissioners authorizes the issuance of license with final approval for intoxicating liquor granted by the Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division of the State of Minnesota / Department of Public Safety. Liquor license fees vary depending on the type of license, effective date of the license, and location of the establishment.

St. Louis County Ordinance No. 28 pursuant to and in conjunction with the law and regulations of MN Statute Chapter 340A details liquor license restrictions and regulations.

If your establishment is located in an organized township, you need to obtain township approval after completing the Township Approval Form.

Precious Metal Dealer

Obtaining a Precious Metal Dealer License

This license is issued to an individual, partnership, or corporation engaging in the business of buying secondhand items containing precious metal, including, but not limited to, jewelry, watches, eating utensils, candlesticks, and religious and decorative objects.  The license fee is $52.00 for the initial site and $6.00 for each additional site.

Tobacco

Obtaining a Tobacco Products License

This license is issued for the retail sale, possession, and use of tobacco and tobacco related devices.  The tobacco products license is obtained under St. Louis County Ordinance No. 51, in accordance with Minnesota Statutes Chapter 461 (1997).  The annual license runs from January 1 to December 31.

Tobacco Statutes

 

Transient Merchant

Obtaining a Transient Merchant License

This license is issued to an individual, co-partnership, limited liability company, and corporation who engage in, do, or transact any temporary and transient business in this state, either in one locality, or in traveling from place to place in this state, selling goods, wares, and merchandise; and who, for the purpose of carrying on such business, hire, lease, occupy, or use a building, structure, vacant lot, or railroad car for the exhibition and sale of such goods, wares, and merchandise.  The term "transient merchant" does not include a seller or exhibitor in a firearms collector show involving two or more sellers or exhibitors.  The license fee is $150.00 per site.
