Aging & Adult Health

In Minnesota, there are currently more people 65 and older than those 18 and under. In just 10 years, this will be the case for the entire United States. This makes how we prepare for, think and talk about aging even more important. We can all benefit from additional supports that keep us connected to our communities, allow us to share the skills and knowledge we’ve built over our lifetimes, and help us thrive as we age. As public health professionals, we work with community partners to ensure that policies and safeguards are in place that promote healthy aging for all county residents. Join us in reframing the way we think about aging!

We also provide care coordination services for qualifying residents of St. Louis County. Care Coordinators assess individuals to determine needs and find what services, if any, are needed to ensure a full and fair chance to thrive. We can:

  • Help answer questions about available services.
  • Work with providers to help people get the care they need.
  • Help providers share information with each other.
  • Ensure people get home and community-based services they need.

Age-Friendly Community Work

St. Louis County’s Aging and Adult Health Unit is proud to support efforts that make our county a better place to grow older. We are working with local partners, residents, and leaders to make their communities more age-friendly – a place where people of all ages can live, work, and thrive. It is important to shape communities that support people at every age and ability because people are living longer, healthier lives!

Additionally, through the work of the Aging and Adult Health Unit, our county has received Advanced Recognition from the Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) initiative, a program led by Trust for America’s Health. We are the first county in the state to earn this honor. The purpose of the award is to highlight public health's role in healthy aging, and to encourage all public health departments and other organizations to make healthy aging a core function.

Communities interested in becoming more Age-Friendly can apply to join the AARP Age-Friendly Network of Cities & Communities. This network provides tools to help local leaders identify and understand community needs, foster partnerships among passionate groups and local stakeholders, and enable changes that benefit people of all ages.
