Bong Bridge suicide

On January 2, 2025 at 12:42 PM, law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel were called to the Bong Bridge in Duluth on a report of a male who jumped from the bridge. St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies located the deceased party on the ice, on the Minnesota side of the St. Louis River. Duluth Fire personnel recovered the adult male's body and brought him back to shore. According to multiple callers, the male was seen removing pieces of his clothing before darting across traffic and jumping from the Lake Side of the bridge, near the center span. At this time the death is being investigated as a suicide. Efforts are underway to notify next of kin.

On Monday December 30th at approximately 6:30 P.M. St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies and Kabetogama area first responders were notified of a tracked side by side (UTV) that was pulling a fish house, had broken though the ice on Lake Kabetogama within Voyagers National Park.

New Director named at Arrowhead Juvenile Center

Wendy Skottegard-Burke has been promoted to Division Director of the Arrowhead Juvenile Center (AJC) located in Duluth. Skottegard-Burke is a longtime employee of AJC, starting as a corrections counselor in 1996.. Since 2015, she has been the Treatment Supervisor, overseeing treatment staff and programming at the facility, including contracted mental health, education, cultural and chaplaincy programs for our residents.

On December 22nd, 2024, at 3pm, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the 6500 block of Black Duck Beach Road, in Camp Five Township, due to a reported sauna on fire.  This is approximately 15 miles north of the city of Orr and in a very remote area.

Snowmobile accident with injuries

On December 19th, 2024, at 1950 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a snowmobile accident on Lake Vermillion in Greenwood Township. Frist responders were requested to respond to the 1800 Block of Everett Bay Road.
