Phone/Money Scam Iron Range

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office has received numerous complaints of a well know phone scam utilized withing St. Louis County in the past. The scam calls parties claiming a relative (Grandson is most commonly used) is in jail and they are required to send money for their bail and release. The new scam has parties showing up for collection at residences after these calls have been placed. Victims within St. Louis Couty have been taken for large sums of money in the Britt, Ely, and Hibbing areas in the past 48 hours. The following is a description of the vehicle and male that was responsible for the incident in the City of Hibbing.

Scholarship program expanded to include building trades

The St. Louis County Board unanimously approved expanding its Tom Rukavina Mineral Royalties Scholarship Program to now offer scholarships to St. Louis County residents pursuing training in the building and construction trades. The vote came during a board meeting held in Hermantown that included speakers representing the Duluth and Iron Range Building and Construction Trades Councils.

Jury Convicts Carbo

On January 31, 2025, a jury found Michael Allan Carbo, Jr., 56, guilty of two counts of Murder in the First Degree While Committing First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. Both charges carry a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole after 17 years.  Mr. Carbo was indicted by Grand Jury on April 13, 2022, for the 1986 murder of Nancy Daugherty in her Chisholm home.

New deputies and correctional officers sworn in; other new employees and recent promotions recognized

Six new deputies and 14 correctional officers have joined the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. During a ceremonial pinning of badges held Wednesday at the Public Safety Building, Sheriff Gordon Ramsay welcomed new deputies Michael Rocklin, Kyle Voltzke, Joseph Mattson, Matthew Nevanen, Joseph Lorenzi, and Jared Warneke. The new deputies joined the Sheriff's Office at various points over the last 13 months.
