Forestry Day to welcome fifth graders from 12 schools into the woods

Fifth graders from a dozen schools in southern St. Louis County will spend part of their day in the woods next Tuesday as part of the 40th annual 5th Grade Forestry Field Day. Forestry Day is a natural resource education outreach event sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of The Society of American Foresters. It will be held September 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at three locations: Lester Park, Chester Park and Upper Spirit Mountain. In the event of rain, activities will be postponed to the following day.

The St. Louis County Board has given initial approval for the 2025 maximum property tax levy in the amount of $180,310,863. While this is a 7.23% increase in the levy compared to last year, it is slightly below the rate of growth in the county's property tax base of 7.8%, which will help offset this increase for many property owners.

School bus driver arrested for DWI

School bus driver arrested for DWI

On September 4th, 2024, just after midnight, the Sheriff's Office was contacted by a concerned citizen who wanted to report a St. Louis County School District bus driver consuming alcohol while off duty. There were concerns he was highly intoxicated and would not be sober by morning when he would likely begin his route. Deputies were able to make contact with the driver at his home just after 0600 hours and he said he was not working today. The school district was notified of this information and shortly after 0700 hours, Deputies received word from the district that the driver was in fact working and had started his route. Patrol deputies received his route information and were able to locate the bus on Independence Rd, just North of Seville Rd. The bus was pulled over without incident and the driver was ultimately arrested for DWI.
