On August 30, 2024 at approximately 8:20 PM, area first responders and law enforcement were dispatched to the report of 3 people sustaining serious burns due to a fire exploding. The incident occurred at an address located in the 12000 block of Jaranson Road, located in French Township, which is located approximately 20 miles north of Hibbing.

Fatal House Fire Old Hwy 61 in Midway Twp

On August 18, 2024 at approximately 2335 hours the St. Lous County Sheriff's Office and Proctor Fire Department were dispatched to a house fire in the 5300 block of Old Hwy 61 in Midway Township.  The house fire was reported by a passerby. The Proctor Fire Department requested mutual aid from the Hermantown Fire Department, Solway Fire Department, Esko Fire Department and the Air National Guard Fire Department.  After approximately two hours of fighting the fire, a deceased male was located in the living room area of the house.  The deceased male is believed to be the homeowner and the lone resident of the address, 61-year-old Michael Oneil.  Positive identification is still pending results from the medical examiner's office.

Community Development Block Grant info sessions set

The St. Louis County Economic and Community Development Department distributed $1.9 million in federal grant money to communities and non-profit organizations in St. Louis County in the last year. These Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds helped cover costs for renovations at the Chisholm Kiwanis Park, Mesabi Fit Coalition, and Range Mental Health; site acquisition for North SLC Habitat for Humanity; water and sewer infrastructure in five communities; meals programs at the Salvation Army locations in Hibbing and Virginia; and support services for low-income and homeless people through nine non-profit organizations.

2024 Plat books now available in print and via mobile app

St. Louis County has updated its Land Atlas and Plat Book for 2024. Printed copies are available for purchase, and a mobile app version is available for smart phones and tablets. The last time the Plat Book was published was in 2020.

FEMA updates hours at Disaster Recovery Center in St. Louis County

The strong initial surge of applications for federal financial aid from St. Louis County residents affected by the June flood has already started to slow, allowing FEMA to reduce its operating hours at the Disaster Recovery Center in Virginia. The Center initially was open seven days a week, but will now be closed on Sundays. It will continue to operate Monday-Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with all appointments on a first come, first served basis.
