On January 8th, the Honorable Robert C. Friday sentenced Douglas Lee Anderson, 70, to 41 months at the Department of Corrections for his role in the November 11, 2021, death of Stanley Erkkila, St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki said. Mr. Anderson pleaded guilty to Criminal Vehicular Homicide on November 13, 2023.

2 Vehicle crash with serious injuries

On Saturday December 30th, 2023, at approximately 0605 A.M. St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies and area first responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle head on accident with injuries, on Hwy 5 in Balkan Township, just South of the Hibbing Taconite main entrance as a result of ice-covered roadway. One driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from their vehicle and is being treated for life threatening injuries. The other driver was treated at the scene with minor injuries and released.
