Public meeting to discuss possible improvements to 40th Avenue West in Duluth

St. Louis County Public Works is in the planning stages for a project to reconstruct a portion of 40th Avenue West in Duluth, from the railroad tracks near 9th Avenue down the hill to Grand Avenue. The project is expected to occur in 2026. County engineers are hosting a kick off meeting to discuss potential improvements and to gather feedback from the public. The meeting will be Monday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m., at Denfeld High School in the West Commons area.

Vehicle stuck by gunfire

On September 9, 2023 law enforcement was dispatched to the report of a shoot out vehicle windows near the Lakeland mobile home park located in Biwabik Township. A short time later a second 911 call was received from a male reporting that a vehicle had rammed into his parked vehicle and shot at the vehicle with a shotgun. No injuries resulted. The shooter  was subsequently taken into custody and charged with several felony level offenses. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office believes that this is an isolated incident and it remains under investigation.

The St. Louis County Board has given initial approval for the 2024 maximum property tax levy in the amount of $168,153,374. This is a 2.93% increase in the levy compared to last year, however continued growth in the property tax base will help offset this increase for many property owners.

St. Louis County is opening a gravel pit to accept tree debris free of charge that resulted from the powerful wind storm that blew through the Gilbert, Aurora and Hoyt Lakes area on September 5.
