More than 2,500 people are scheduled to attend the 41st annual St. Louis County Health & Human Services Conference, which opens Wednesday at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC). The annual conference is one of the largest in the state for human services professionals, and runs through Friday. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is offering the public a new opportunity for an inside look at how it operates through a 10-week Citizens' Academy. Classes begin November 1 and will be offered Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Classes will include interactive presentations and tours to give citizens a better understanding of the range of services provided by the Sheriff's Office. Any St. Louis County resident ages 18 or older may apply. Applicants will be required to pass a criminal background check. The deadline to apply is October 25, 2023.

The Northern St. Louis County Mental Health Local Advisory Council (LAC) is hosting a public meeting and listening session to gather input on mental health needs for children, older adults, and law enforcement. On October 7, 2023 at approximately 1942 hours, area first responders and law enforcement were dispatched to the report of a 38-year-old female who had been struck in the chest by a tree branch while riding as a passenger in a side-by-side type of ATV. The incident took place on a designated ATV trail located south of Hibbing.
The female was transported by ambulance to Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing where she was later pronounced deceased. There was no indication of alcohol use nor excessive speed.
The accident remains under investigation by the St Louis County Sheriffs Office.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the report a two vehicle accident with injuries in the 3700 block of Martin Road in the City of Rice Lake. A mini van collided with a flat bed truck. The front passenger of the mini van was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the mini van was transported via ambulance to Essentia Hospital in Duluth. The driver of the flat bed truck was unharmed.
