The St. Louis County Board has given initial approval for the 2024 maximum property tax levy in the amount of $168,153,374. This is a 2.93% increase in the levy compared to last year, however continued growth in the property tax base will help offset this increase for many property owners.

Information was previously released concerning level 3 predatory offender MICHAEL PERO, who has moved into the vicinity of Lakewood Rd and Roberg Rd in Lakewood Township. In order to provide more information to the community, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Corrections, will be hosting a community notification meeting concerning his release. The meeting will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lakewood Town Hall, 3110 Strand Road, Duluth, MN 55803. Representatives from the Sheriff's Office and Dept. of Corrections will be available to provide the community with useful information on public safety.

Deputies from the St Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to an automated 911 call from an iPhone stating that the owner had been in a severe crash. The vehicle was located on a curve near the 11500 block of Highway 8, near Floodwood. Upon arrival, Deputies found 2 occupants of the vehicle deceased and the driver in critical condition still trapped inside. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition. Alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors of the crash and it remains under investigation.

Jana Blomberg, a St. Louis County Public Health Program Coordinator, has been honored as one of the
40 Under 40 in Public Health in recognition of her work. The de Beaumont Foundation announced its Class of 2023 on Sept. 7, after reviewing nominations from hundreds of professionals working to benefit state or local public health across the United States. The 40 Under 40 recognition is more than an award, it's also a two-year professional development program, in which Blomberg will now participate.
