St. Louis County seeks proposals for Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention

St. Louis County is looking for ideas on how to prevent the introduction or limit the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in lakes, rivers and other bodies of water. The County is scheduled to receive $709,992 in grant money to award in 2025 through the state's AIS Prevention Aid Program.

Today, Dale John Howard, 25, pled guilty to Second Degree Murder while committing Domestic Assault by Strangulation, St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki said. By entering this plea before Judge Theresa Neo, Mr. Howard acknowledged that he caused the death of his girlfriend, Allisa Vollan, in the early morning hours of March 22, 2024.

Forum scheduled on social connectedness and mental health

The North St. Louis County Local Advisory Council is hosting a free community forum focused on social connectedness and the benefits to mental health. The free event will also include a volunteer expo as a way to help people get more involved and connected with others in their communities

 

The Mental Health Forum and Volunteer Expo is Thursday, October 3, 5-7 p.m. at the Mt. Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Drive. The event is free to attend, but advance registration is encouraged. People can reserve their spot online at: Northern St. Louis County Mental Health Forum and Volunteer Expo Tickets.

Fire at Unoccupied Boy Scout Cabin

On 9/13/2024 at 6:53 PM, a passerby reported a cabin fire in the 5300 block of the Taft Rd. in Fredenberg Township.  The Fredenberg Fire Department and St. Louis County Deputies responded to the scene.  It was determined that this was a Boy Scout camp.  Both the cabin and a shed were on fire and the buildings were determined to be unoccupied. The Interim CEO of the local Boy Scouts of America was advised on the fire, and he stated that no one was scheduled to be on the property on this date.  As a precautionary measure, a State Fire Marshal Investigator was called to the scene to investigate.

Forestry Day to welcome fifth graders from 12 schools into the woods

Fifth graders from a dozen schools in southern St. Louis County will spend part of their day in the woods next Tuesday as part of the 40th annual 5th Grade Forestry Field Day. Forestry Day is a natural resource education outreach event sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of The Society of American Foresters. It will be held September 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at three locations: Lester Park, Chester Park and Upper Spirit Mountain. In the event of rain, activities will be postponed to the following day.
